DJI Six-Pin Cable: SBUS Radio Control + ELRS
Why the six-pin SBUS cable matters
Power + MSP/DisplayPort handle the DJI O4 video link and Betaflight OSD. SBUS is the part that lets a compatible DJI FPV controller also control the aircraft through the DJI system. The controller joins the DJI control/video ecosystem, the control commands reach the O4 Air Unit over the DJI digital link, and the Air Unit passes those commands to the flight controller through the SBUS wire. That is the main reason to keep the SBUS conductor connected when you want to fly the quad with a compatible DJI controller instead of a separate ELRS receiver.
If you use ExpressLRS for flight control, the DJI O4 system can still handle video and OSD while the SBUS control wire is removed or isolated.
1. The six conductors
| Function | Purpose | Typical FC destination |
|---|---|---|
| Power | Air-unit supply | Verified compatible pad |
| Ground | Power return | GND |
| Air Unit TX | MSP/OSD data out | FC RX |
| Air Unit RX | MSP/OSD data in | FC TX |
| SBUS | DJI radio control | FC SBUS pad or suitable RX |
| SBUS ground | Signal reference | GND per diagram |
2. Safe installation
- Remove props; disconnect LiPo and USB.
- Verify both connector pinouts and input voltage.
- Route away from carbon edges, prop arcs and motor wires.
- Add strain relief without crushing the plug.
- Install the air-unit antenna before battery power.
- Use a smoke stopper for first power when practical.
- Use a fan during long bench sessions.
3. Betaflight for DJI SBUS
Use your actual UART numbers. Enable Serial RX on the UART receiving SBUS. In Receiver, choose Serial (via UART) and SBUS. A dedicated SBUS pad may include hardware inversion; normal RX-pad requirements vary by FC.
4. Use the DJI controller through the six-pin SBUS connection
This is the control path the SBUS wire is there for: a compatible DJI FPV controller sends pilot commands through the DJI system, those commands reach the O4 Air Unit, and the Air Unit outputs them as SBUS to the flight controller. The flight controller then treats that SBUS signal as the receiver input for the quad.
- Update compatible air unit, goggles and remote firmware.
- Bind the air unit to the compatible goggles and verify video.
- Bind the compatible DJI remote for that generation into the DJI system.
- Confirm the O4 Air Unit SBUS conductor is connected to the correct flight-controller SBUS/RX input.
- In Betaflight, enable Serial RX on the correct UART and select SBUS as the serial receiver provider.
- Verify all axes and AUX switches in the Receiver tab.
- Confirm directions, centers and endpoints.
- Turn the radio off and verify failsafe—props removed.
5. DJI control vs ExpressLRS: two good approaches
| Area | DJI SBUS | ExpressLRS |
|---|---|---|
| Radio choice | Compatible DJI remotes | Many EdgeTX radios/modules |
| Telemetry | Limited ecosystem | Rich CRSF telemetry |
| Packet rates | Limited | Selectable rates/modes |
| Video independence | Tied to DJI chain | Independent control link |
| Repair options | Air-unit path involved | Small receiver replacement |
6. Install ELRS
- Ports: Serial RX on the ELRS UART only.
- Receiver: Serial (via UART), provider CRSF.
- Telemetry enabled.
serialrx_inverted = OFFserialrx_halfduplex = OFF- Bind with a phrase when possible; match ELRS major versions.
- Verify channels, LQ/RSSI telemetry and radio-off failsafe.
