Props off for all setup. Use an antenna on the O4 unit, provide airflow while it is powered on the bench, and keep a charged battery available. The DJI video link and your ELRS control link are separate.
1. Identify and prepare your goggles
Charge the goggles. The N3 has a roomy single display that can accommodate many prescription glasses. The Goggles 3 have dual micro-OLED displays with adjustable diopters; set interpupillary distance and diopters for a sharp picture. Remove lens protection before viewing. Install the current DJI Fly app from DJI’s official download page on a compatible phone, and sign into your DJI account.
2. Activate the goggles and O4 unit
- Turn on the goggles, connect their USB-C port to a compatible phone running DJI Fly, and follow the on-screen activation prompts. Accept any required account or network steps.
- Activate the O4 Air Unit series device separately when DJI Fly or DJI Assistant 2 prompts for activation. Activation of the goggles alone does not activate the air unit.
- If the phone cannot detect a device, try a data-capable USB-C cable, unlock the phone, update DJI Fly, or use DJI Assistant 2 (Consumer Drones Series) on a computer with the device powered and connected by USB.
DJI says an unactivated O4 Air Unit can be limited to 20 mW, so do not skip its activation.
3. Update the goggles to support O4 before linking
- With charged goggles powered on and connected to DJI Fly, accept the offered goggles firmware update. Alternatively connect them to DJI Assistant 2 (Consumer Drones Series), choose the detected goggles and install the latest firmware offered for that model.
- Connect and update the O4 Air Unit / O4 Air Unit Pro / O4 Wide Air Unit separately. Select the exact device that you own; do not assume updating the goggles updates the air unit.
- If you use the DJI FPV Remote Controller 3, update it separately too. ELRS users can skip the DJI controller update and pairing.
- Keep each device powered and connected until its update finishes. Restart the goggles and air unit, then check their firmware status in DJI Fly or Assistant 2.
Missing O4 from the goggles’ device list? Finish activation and firmware updates on both sides, restart, and open Status in the goggles menu to select the corresponding O4 Air Unit model. Older firmware or the wrong selected device is a common cause of “it won’t pair.” Menu labels can vary with firmware.
4. Link the goggles to the O4 Air Unit
- Remove props. Attach the O4 antenna, supply suitable power to the quad, and point a fan at the air unit during extended bench work.
- Power the goggles. In Status, use the device selector at the upper right to choose your O4 Air Unit model.
- When the air unit indicator is solid red, press its link button. The red light blinks in linking mode.
- Start linking mode on the goggles using their menu/link control. They beep while searching. Keep the devices near each other.
- Successful linking stops the beeps, shows a live camera image, and makes the air unit indicator solid green.
What about the radio?
If your quad has an ExpressLRS receiver, bind the RadioMaster or other ELRS transmitter to that receiver independently. DJI goggles handle video and Betaflight OSD; ELRS handles flight control. You do not need a DJI FPV Remote Controller 3 just to fly an O4 video system. If you choose the DJI controller instead, follow DJI’s controller linking sequence and configure the flight controller’s SBUS input correctly in Betaflight. Do not assume a video picture means the controls work.
5. Check the picture, OSD, and controls
- Confirm live video and the correct quad name/device in the goggles.
- Confirm Betaflight OSD elements appear. If the picture works but OSD does not, check O4-to-flight-controller wiring, the MSP/DisplayPort configuration and the selected UART.
- With props still removed, check receiver channel movement and modes in Betaflight; verify failsafe and motor direction before a flight.
- Power down the bench setup if the air unit grows hot. Give the air unit airflow any time it is powered for a while.
N3 versus Goggles 3: which is the better value?
| Goggles N3 | Goggles 3 |
|---|
| Display and fit | One 1080p ultra-wide LCD, 54° field of view; roomy interior for many eyeglasses | Two micro-OLED displays, adjustable diopters and IPD; more compact fit |
|---|
| Extras | Simple setup and built-in battery; DJI quotes up to 2.7 hours under test conditions | Real View PiP lets you see surroundings without removing the headset |
|---|
| Best fit | Value-focused setup or pilots who prefer wearing glasses | Premium viewing and built-in fit adjustment |
|---|
Both support the DJI O4 Air Unit series when updated. Choose by comfort, optics, and the price you can actually buy them for. Try the fit if possible: the better view is the one you can comfortably focus on.
Quick troubleshooting
The O4 option is absent
Update goggles firmware, activate the devices, restart, then select the correct O4 model in Status. Update the O4 unit too.
Link button pressed, but no picture
Check antenna, quad power, air unit status LED, device selection, firmware, and distance. Restart and repeat the linking sequence. A cooling fan helps prevent heat-related interruptions.
Picture works, but no sticks or OSD
ELRS radio binding is separate from DJI video binding. For missing OSD inspect flight-controller UART/MSP DisplayPort wiring and settings. For a DJI controller, check its separate link and SBUS configuration.
